and Sciences and Law School. After graduation, Snead became an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve where he served during World War II. After the war, he was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney of Rappahannock County and later became the Circuit Court judge for Rappahannock, Fauquier, and Loudoun counties.
Judge Snead’s wife, Lois Doran Snead, has told her story of growing up in Independence, Mo. in another book compiled by her husband, “The Girl of Independence,” as told to Rayner V. Snead. In Independence, Lois Doran’s neighbors were Harry Truman and family, and her classmate was Mort Walker, who later became known as the cartoonist for the famous comic strip, “Beetle Bailey.”
In the book we meet Lois Doran, an incredibly strong and resourceful girl who learned self-reliance at an early age, when she suffered with, and overcame, double curvature of the spine. Lois Doran Snead'has given us her personal perspective about family life growing up
