Lander said the foundation is glad that the county has acknowledged the group’s high interest in rehabing the old building. He told the supervisors that the group would pursue several avenues of preservation including turning the school into a museum and interpretive center; allowing residential use with conditions; or finding Em existing community organization to rehab and use the school for its activities.
“The successful rehabilitation of Scrabble School would ultimately be a major preservation achievement of which all residents of the county could be proud,” said Lander.
Efforts to preserve the school were begun in the early 1990s by alumni Franklin E. Warner, who passed away last year.
For 45 years the two-room school house was home to one of four Rosenwald Schools constructed in the county to educate African-American students in an era when learning was still separate and far from equal.
Rosenwald Schools were named for philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears, Roebuck who in 1917 established a fund which he and his famous partner, Booker T. Washington, aided in the funding of 4,977 schools prior to the program’s end in 1932.
