Washington was unique in the area in that its drinking water came directly from the aquifer.

"If this system is used, it will be engineered to be far enough away not to impact a well," White said. “During design a hydroengineering study would have to be done."

Land used as a drainfield could be used for other purposes later, but the topsoil would need to be removed, according to White.

White noted that there was no difference in Department of Environmental Quality standards whether a drip irrigation system was implemented or the treated wastewater was discharged into the Rush River.

“In either case,” White said, “a wastewater treatment facility would need to be built.”

WW Associates proposes building an underground facility, with only the tops of the treatment tanks visible. The site would require a minimum of 10 acres and the plant would be adequately screened from public view.

Collecting and piping wastewater to Sperryville would be the most costly option according to White. The Sperryville plant would need to be upgraded to increase its
