Sherertz said that just before Lakeside clubhouse, traffic had been stopped and “approximately 15 deputies and troopers were waiting with spikes in the road.”
“The subject went offroad next to Lakeside,” Sherertz said. “He drove the truck into a field and spun out with me and the two troopers right behind him.”
Suspect arrested
According to Tyler, the suspect then raised his hands and was taken into custody.
Sherertz said the Culpeper County Sheriff’s office deserved much of the credit.
“My hat’s off to the Culpeper Sheriff’s Department,” Sherertz said. “They had an overwhelming number of deputies there.”
Sherertz also gave credit to the Virginia State Police, the Culpeper Town Police, and his Rappahannock deputies.
“I’ve been in a number of high speed chases in my 30year career,” Sherertz said. “This ranks right up there with the worst of them. At about 20 miles, it’s probably the longest.”
Sherertz said the last time he was involved in a high-speed chase of a felon was in the early 1990s, when he was with the Fairfax City Police.
“God was with law enforcement today,” Sherertz said.
