“I headed south on 231 and approximately one mile south of F.T. Valley Grocery, I saw a white Ford pickup, a Ranger,” Sherertz said.
Sherertz said he quickly did a U-tum and followed the truck as he called in the tag to the dispatcher. It was close to the one reported by the bank he said, only off by “one letter or number.”
Shortly after Trooper Nicholas R. White got onto 231 heading north, he saw several Rappahannock County deputies going south, according to Tyler.
‘Thinking that he’d overshot the suspect, Trooper White started to turn around,” Tyler said. “At that time, the white truck with the Rappahannock sheriff in pursuit, passed him heading north.”
Trooper White got in behind the sheriff and the suspect took off at a high rate of speed, turning onto Route 522 heading toward Culpeper, according to Tyler.
Road spikes
At the intersection of Routes 604 and 522, Trooper Robert L. Hamilton attempted to put out road spikes, according to Sherertz, “but we were on him before he could put them out.”
Sherertz said that Trooper Hamilton got in front of him at that point.
