fall months bring cooler temperatures that entice us to keep our windows open both day and night, and the unique sounds of nature come back to our ears. Now—especially in the evening—we can hear our' nocturnal friends communicate.
One such bird, often heard but seldom seen, is the Eastern Screech Owl. Its call or song, heard spring and fall, is not a screech as most would guess, but a soft, mournful whinny that starts high and then descends downward. You may think you heard the neigh of a high-pitched horse right outside your window.
The screech owl is the smallest member of the owl family in the eastern United States. It is a year-round resident of Rappahannock.County, and once it becomes established in a territory, it becomes a permanent resident.
As this owl is strictly a bird of the night, it spends its days concealed in hollow trees or other cavities. It is common for it to hide out in woodlots. old orchards or near small villages.
