Down Memory Lane
Local voters turned out in record numbers to re-elect Lyndon B. Johnson to a full term as president with a 226 majority over his Republican opponent Barry Goldwater. This marked the first time since the Truman campaign of 1948 that the county has returned to the Democratic presidential fold. A total of 1,127 votes were cast in the county, an increase of 158 over the 1960 general election.
The Gordon Thornhill family of Boston was recognized last week as the outstanding farm family in Rappahannock County. A certificate was presented to the Thornhills at the dinner meeting Thursday of the Culpeper Water and Soil Conservation District. Ifelevision 7 News will air a special on country living in Rappahannock County Nov. 5-11 at 6 and 9 p.m. “Just Plain Folk” will follow “Doc” J.C. Johnson from farm to farm; the Tom Lee family and brother Jim Lee, farmers who raise cattle and grow peaches and apples; and visit a baptismal ceremony conducted in the Thornton River by Rev. Milton Switzer of the Hope Hill Baptist Church in Castleton.
Bob Darby of Woodville headed up a meeting at the library last Thursday night to introduce the new chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The first Rappahannock County “partner” family to be approved to have a new home built for them is Barbara Shanks and family who live on Piedmont Avenue just outside of Washington.
