The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community brings “De-Lovely” to The Theatre on Gay Street in Washington on Friday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m.
As a “best hits” collection of Cole Porter’s music, “De-Lovely” is unparalleled with approximately two dozen of his tunes performed by artists as diverse as Robbie Williams, Elvis Costello, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow and Natalie Cole. It is a treasure trove of music and memories. This and the wonderful performance of Kevin Kline makes “De-Lovely” worth seeing.
Cole Porter came from an era in which ballads defined the music scene, a place not just technologically different from our own but one in which lofty ideals were prevalent. Changes in musical styles mean you’ll not likely hear Porter’s songs on the radio these days but in big cities like New York, you can pick up his catchy tunes in cabarets and even a concert stage like New York’s City Center Theater.
Written by Jay Cocks and directed by Irwin Winkler, “De-Lovely” is an impressionistic portrait of the man, his complex love life, and the tribulations he suffered from a disastrous fall from a horse along with his successes in the theater and at private parties.
