“Sunnyside @ The Schoolhouse,” one of Cole’s last investments left in Rappahannock County, is now slated for closure.
This announcement followed shortly after General Manager of the Schoolhouse, Philip Morgan announced his departure from the Sunnyside operations.
Morgan, who recently stated that the Schoolhouse would continue as a viable operation, declined to comment on.the nature of his departure.
“Mr. Cole has been withdrawing from the county for several years,” Sunnyside spokeswoman Tamara Waldo wrote in' an email to the Rappahannock News, “This has been a gradual, well thought out process.” Waldo also declined to comment on Morgan’s departure.
The closing operations at the Schoolhouse, located in Sperryville, include the Burger Barn and the Flying Pig, which opened as a pub last November.
Cole leased the Schoolhouse property from Cliff Miller, a local farmer from Sperryville.
A clause in the contract between Miller and Cole allowed Cole to buy his way out of the lease early if necessary.
“Mr. Cole is doing exactly what he has to do,” said Miller. “I am just sorry that it didn’t work.” Both Miller and Waldo confirmed that Cole’s lease of the property ends June 30.
