Company to establish an outpost in Virginia in 1607. A short, stocky soldier of fortune from Lincolnshire, Smith had fought Spaniards and Turks across the map of Europe.
He had been captured and enslaved in Turkey, until he killed his master and escaped to Russia before returning to England. Having survived internal dissension that had led to his temporary arrest on the voyage over, Smith assumed leadership of the colony during the first starvation crisis and saved Jamestown by imposing discipline among the colonists and negotiating with the Powhatans to supply them with com.
He navigated most of the Chesapeake waterways, mapping the region and contacting many tribes. He endured captivity among the Indians and plots against his life by both Indians and his fellow Englishmen. Smith returned to England in 1609, never to return to Virginia, but he explored the northern coast of America and is credited with naming it New England.
