For Sale: Mountain Retreat with Million Dollar Views. Located in a secluded hollow of the Blue Ridge. This property was once part of a large apple orchard and many trees remain in the high meadows above the homestead.
fruit from these trees was packed and shipped from a store in Sperryville owned by P.H. O’Bannon. Apples not quickly sent elsewhere after picking were dried at several small plants also located in Sperryville. Much of the dried fruit would be consumed locally.
When demand for Rappahannock apples accelerated during the (nineteen) 30s, larger storage and packing plants became a necessity. Most of the resulting buildings for these plants, all constructed prior to and just after World War II, remain today as massive reminders of the once immense scope of the local fruit industry.
