Preparing for college is a long process. It begins in the eighth grade with course selection, study habits, and extracurricular activities. What colleges are looking for is very simple: students who challenge themselves academically and do well, who have interests they have pursued in depth. With this in mind, you can’t wait until your junior or senior year to start thinking about your future. The sooner you start, the more options you will have and the better able you will be to make a good decision.
The following information is designed to give you an idea of the steps every student should take. It is never too late to start.
Eighth Grade
The classes that you take in eighth grade are important in deciding what classes you will take in high school. Take the harder classes so that you will be ready for college prep classes. The sooner that you begin challenging yourself and learning good study habits, the easier the transition to high school and college will be.
