Freshman Year
Many young freshmen get caught up in the excitement of high school and don’t focus on their grades as much as they should. Here are a few steps to consider when starting your freshman year:
• Take challenging classes. Get help if you need it.
• Get involved in activities. Exploring activities outside of class can be beneficial in developing skills, having fun, and building a resume. Look for clubs, sports, church activities, student government, yearbook, school paper, summer programs, etc.
• Start a calendar with important dates and deadlines.
• Research the PSAT test at www.collegeboard.com.
• Learn about college costs and how financial aid works. Start a savings plan for college - ask your local bank about the Virginia 529 Plan.
