But the best part is, he has dazzling blue eyes, which he focuses on his questioner, leaving me slightly disappointed that my own questions were all directed into his back.
Still, I had the distinct honor of speaking with winning owners, Lael Stable’s Gretchen and Howell Jackson, who also own ill-fated Derby winner Barbado. After our formal interview, we swapped stories about their Fauquier County cousin, my neighbor and friend Drew Schaefer.
I had the opportunity to relate to the Jacksons how Schaefer told me excitedly that his cousins had two horses in the Derby, causing me to mentally roll my eyes and think “Yeah, right.” But you know, the Jacksons do own two champions, the one in the Turf Cup winner’s circle and Derby winner Barbado, bravely fighting for his life at New Bolton Center after his misstep at the Preakness.
Yeah, right. Good racing. Good friends. Well run, clean, comfortable facility.
And piercing blue eyes to contemplate on the drive home.
