Tagg further noted that unlike the Triple Crown races, in which all entries go off at equal weights, the races at Colonial are run under allowance conditions. Showing Up carried 120 compared with Kip Deville’s 116 and Go Between’s 118, and would cany even more in three weeks.
Tagg said he believes the Strategic Mission colt, though undefeated on the dirt before his disappointing sixth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, actually moves better on the turf.
When asked how he prepared Showing Up for his conversion to turf, Tagg, who owns a bam at the Fair Hill, Md. training track, said he galloped the colt on the grass about 15 times and that the bay liked it each time.
