Where did
they come from?
It is easy to imagine that there were always app\e orchards in the County, however it appears that attempts at commercial production only arose after the Civil War. After the conflict, Rappahannock veteran C.B. Wood started a nursery. In addition to selling apple trees that led to the advent of local orchards, Wood, in a clever advertising ploy, also sent a barrel of apples to Queen Victoria of England. The barrel’s contents, Albemarle Pippins, caught the queen’s fancy and a foreign market for Rappahannock apples was created.
