lengths that were taken to ensure the look and feel of the original mercantile building. The original flooring and shelving were saved and returned to the original color; right down to the “Katie bar the door” handle on the hack porch entrance. The entire Tbwn of Washington has been improved by the restoration of the mercantile and The Clopton House grounds which allows commerce to continue while other businesses have cut and run.
As a direct result of the Coles passion for historic preservation, Sunnyside Farms itself is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The main farm house, former slave quarters, school house, and original diy stack rock walls were all meticulously restored by some of Virginia’s finest craftsmen and architects. Great care was taken to preserve the native plants and landscape because the Coles understood the importance of the farm and its history as the first apple orchard planted in Rappahannock County. They have chosen to continue the farm’s agriculture programs while many farms of similar size have sold out to developers. Their listing agreement for the farm requires that the new owner agree to an easement program as condition of sale.
As we look to the next phase of Sunnyside Farms and its consolidation of operations to Maui it would be a disservice to the community to not reflect on the accomplishments made by Mr. Cole, his family, and the dedicated team of people who have worked with him to connect local, organic foods to the families in our region.
