take top awards
This year for the first time, Wakefield Country Day School marked its lower school’s closing ceremonies in the comfort of its newly air-conditioned Leonard M. Cowherd Auditorium -- a welcome change from sweltering celebrations of the past.
The Class of 2010 marched into the auditorium, all smiles, to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, and college advisor Marsha Dowell gave the invocation.
Following the national anthem, head of school Kathleen Grove gave welcoming remarks, and the faculty then took turns presenting various awards for achievements in academic subjects, athletics and leadership.
Seventh grader Christine Pankow of Flint Hill dominated the evening, receiving the grammar school’s geography award, mathematics award, history award, Latin award, and the Pamela Lynn-Tucker Leadership award, and she also participated in a new tra.dition introduced this year. As part of the closing ceremonies, the two grammar school students with the highest grade point averages were given an opportunity to give brief Comments.
That honor fell to Christine and her classmate Sarah Hazel of Spenyville. Both girls showed tremendous poise and composure during their remarks, prompting both proud smiles and appreciative chuckles from their audience. Sarah Hazel received the grammar school art award.
