Rappahannock is indeed fortunate to have been one of the special places Mr. Cole chose to explore sustainable agriculture, historic preservation, and applied research in sustainable agriculture. Today, the citizens of Maui are the beneficiaries of a unique talent that the citizens of Rappahannock once had a chance to keep as their own. As a Virginian I understand how hard it can be to accept new ideas from outsiders. However, in this day and age we may want to extend the welcome mat to those that are genuinely interested in preserving our best farms and our cultural memory. If we are fortunate enough to get another one, let’s not drive the next David Cole away.
