Giving honorable mention to the paper in the “General Excellence” category for tabloids and newspapers (won by full-color glossy monthly Horsemen’s Yankee Pedlar and the full-color glossy weekly the Thoroughbred Times), judges were equally positive: “Professional reporting and newspaper layout helped this entry stand out among its peer group. Stunning photos ... plus effective use of type .. pulls readers inside. Interior layouts are clean. Story topics score well with readers for service orientation and education.”
Times-Democrat business editor and Rail Chatter columnist George Rowand was recognized in the equinerelated book category with second prize for his “Diary of a Dream” autobiography. Publisher Eclipse Press nominated the work.
A number of other Virginia publications also scored well at the AHP awards. Millwood’s Norman Fine, editor of the Covertside magazine of the Masters of Foxhounds Association, won honorable mention in the feature article category and magazine cover page category, and second prize in the editorial category. Middleburg editor of the Chronicle of the Horse magazine Tricia Booker won honorable mention in the event coverage category for her story on the Spruce Meadows horse show.
Eventing USA, produced by Leesburg’s U.S. Eventing Association, won honorable mention in the event coverage design category for their story on Scottsville rider Kim Severson and her 2005 Rolex
