Taking the reins of the professional women’s basketball team was an eye-opener.
For example, the Mystics have two showers and bathroom stalls in their locker room, whereas the NBA Wizards and NHL Capitals have several. Johnson is working to market the WNBA and turn it into a profitable organization so the professional female .athletes can enjoy the same amenities as their male counterparts.
The Mystics average 6,838 fans a game. They drew more than 10,000 a game last year and in 2002 averaged more than 16,000 a contest.
Johnson also works hard in the area of philanthropy, mainly in causes to benefit women and children. With the Mystics Foundation, she is leading fights against obesity, violence, teen pregnancy, drugs and AIDS.
Another part of her work with the Mystics Foundation is teaching young men to respect women. She is upset, she said, by what BET and the rest of television has become, with music videos that degrade women. Johnson said she feels the public must start boycotting these videos and programs, so networks will stop making money from them.
