Tagg applauds Colonial’s efforts to promote turf racing, which lacks the broad media respect generated by name races on the dirt. Tagg said, “Colonial Downs could change all of that.
“Showing Up has a grass pedigree,” Tagg explained. “When you go to the sales and read the catalogs, grass pedigrees are not so popular. Everyone is looking for a classic winner that can run on the dirt.”
Winning owners Gretchen and Howell Jackson of Andrews Bridge, Pa., won a race on the turf with homebred Barbado before capturing the May 6 Kentucky Derby (on the dirt). That same day George Washington, also homebred but sold as a yearling by the Jacksons, won the English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, also on the turf.
Barbara broke a hind leg early in the running of the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. He underwent delicate surgery to repair his pastern joint and remains in intensive care at the New Bolton Center.
