BZA Voles Variance Down
Rappahannock’s Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) denied July 25 the Child Care and Learning Center’s request for a variance from the rear setback requirement of 150 feet. The vote was 3-1, with one abstention.
BZA members who voted against granting of the variance said they could not allow the variance under the state’s legal definition of hardship. They were: Chairman Lee Bird, Peter Kramer and James Swindler.
George Muth voted for granting of the variance; Sharon Luke abstained due to conflict of interest.
The meeting was interrupted by two executive (private) sessions, when BZA members said they had to discuss personnel matters. Both times, Child Care and Learning Center representatives protested.
It’s the fourth time the variance issue has come before county officials, the second time before the BZA.

• Is Rappahannock Next On List?
Rappahannock may be next on the list of Virginia counties that could be sued for failure to comply with state animal-welfare laws.
Following a June 25 inspection of Rappahannock’s animal-shelter facilities, Dr. L. E. Bowen, Jr., state animal welfare officer, filed a report describing county facilities as unacceptable in nine of 11 areas.
Walt Lane, president of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies, will conduct a meeting on the findings, open to the public, next Monday, July 30, at 7:30 p.m., at the Washington Fire Hall.
