The Republicans do not, of course, have a monopoly on cynical efforts to re-write history in their favor, nor on seixsm and racism. But as these two men remind us, they do seem unnaturally concerned both with “decent looks” and with the look of decency. Perhaps it’s because, as the party of wealth and privilege, they would naturally prefer appearance to reality.
