Maybe it’s just the political season, but remarks by two prominent local Republicans quoted in last week’s News aroused my interest. First, the Chairman of the Rappahannock Republican Committee was asked his opinion of the Democrats’ choice of Rep. Geraldine Ferraro as their vice presidential candidate. He responded that she would make a "decent vice president,” and then added that she’s "decent looking” too. The unabashed sexism of this unfortunate remark is as revealing and it is disturbing. Whatever innate discrimination lies at the core of right wing values, it is rarely so baldly stated for the public record.
