Another item of note waa the presence of three of next year’s potential candidates for governor at the convention. Lt. Gov. Richard Davis, Attorney General Gerald Baliles and Del Richard Bagley of Hampton were very much a part of the convention scene.
None were delegates and each repeatedly cautioned that the politics of next year should not be allowed to intrude on the politics of 1964.
For the moat part, however, they spent their time quietly working the Virginia delegates in an early search for votes. Nobody minded because that’s the way politics work in Virginia. The press was grateftil because it gave us something to write about at a convention which was not exactly a cUflhanger. One observer noted however, that the three traveled 8,000 miles to stay out of Virginia potitids.
Finally, a word must be said about The Californian, Virginia’s much maligned host hotel in San Francisco. Before the convention, word spread that the hotel was a “fleabag.” It was said to be seedy, dirty, hot and - horror of horrors - next door to a "massage parlor.” Well, the hotel was not exartly the Waldorf Astoria, and there was not only a massage parlor next door, but they were scattered up and down the adjoining streets in all directions.
