Most women are afraid to leave the situation because the husband supports them and the children. However, more women today are willing to issue an arrest warrant and have the husband or boyfriend jailed or fined because there are legal options to help the victim get child support and ownership of the house.

Effective this month (July 1), a juvenile court judge can provide the following conditions at a preliminary hearing initiated by an abused spouse:

•Prohibition of further abusive acts.

•Prohibition of certain other contacts between the spouses.

•Grant possession of the shared residences of the parties to the abused spouse. Provision of alternative housing to the abused spouse and any children.

This preliminary order may be issued at the hearing if only the abused spouse is present, if immediate and present danger of spouse abuse is demonstrated to the court, and a full hearing involving both spouses will be held within 15 days of the preliminary order.
