The summer influx of thousands of visitors has brought changes that are welcomed by some and deplored by others. Debate over the island’s future (to be or not to be a tourist mecca) has intensified.
Local businessmen are delighted with the changes, seeing them as creating an environment conducive to profit-making. Many residents, however, are dejected and claim the changes are creating a plastic, honky-tonk ambience. They see a fading paradise.
An elderly island native says residents believed they were living in their own small piece of heaven. Now they are concerned about how much more development the island can accommodate before they, like their neighbors, are forced out of their homes.
Once tourism discovered Chincoteague, more and more local businessmen mounted the bandwagon, driven by the belief that more businesses would mean better conditions for all.
