experiences and a heavy military background are factors in spouse abuse but not the causes. In a family where the mother is abused, the children are often victims of mental, physical or sexual abuse — therefore, the battering syndrome continues.
Battering follows a cyclical pattern. Things go well for a period of time, then tension begins mounting, there is an instance of battering, then the husband apologizes for his behavior and promises never to do it again and the cycle starts again.
The Women’s Abuse Shelter is a crisis center for battered women who have no where else to turn. The shelter advises women on how to get protection, legal assistance, support and counseling services.
One-on-one volunteers go through an intense, nine-hour training course and attend monthly support meetings. Although volunteers are only on duty from 7-10 a.m. and p.m. the shelter has made arrangements for 24-hour coverage.
