While the combination of these works was creating the feeling she sought, there was still the problem of what to put with them to fill the large space physically. Waddell felt she wanted something soft in appearance, possibly a fabric sculpture.
After consulting Sam Clifton, with whom she had worked before, they decided he could provide what she was looking for.
Clifton’s sculpture entitled “Space Triptych,” hangs nine feet off the floor — a swell of rainbow color on three free-floating wing-like frames tied off to the walls. The piece makes use of tension both within the components of the sculpture itself and between the sculpture and the walls.
The internal tension is created by forth colored wires that pull lightweight rot-and-strut frames covered by lycra, a fabric unique in its ability to stretch in two directions. Each covered frame becomes curved and twisted, creating movement and a sense of deep
