Anticipation is growing for local runners who will be among the several hundred competitors lining up for the 10 a.m. start of the eighth Fodderstack 10-Kilometer Road Race on Saturday.
The annual event has become almost as much a fixture of spring in Rappahannock County as the apple blossoms festooning the orchards which-line the race course. The race, which is run along the old stagecoach road from Flint Hill to Washington, has gained widespread notoriety among runners as a challenge to even seasoned and highly-conditioned veteran road-racers.
For those runners, the Fodderstack 10-K is just one of the first of a summer of weekends at the races, but.there also are runners who begin and end their competitive season with the local classic. Indeed, a number of the entrants will be making the 6.2-mile trek over the rolling Rappahannock hills purely for the personal satisfaction of being part of the event.
