Mrs. O’Meara failed to finish last year after succumbing to heat exhaustion in the 92-degree heat. This year her husband, Barney and her sister and brother-in-law, Liz and Bruce Ktmiholm from Durham, N.C., will join her at the starting line.
Another North Carolinian who has figured prominently in past Fodderstack races will be unable to compete this year is Larry Forrester of Chapel Hill. Mr. Forrester, who first ran — and won — the event in 1982, has returned several years since and last year captured first place in the 30-34 age group.
For Mr. Forrester, the event embodies many of the best traditions of road racing. “The event reminds me of the early days... It is well-organized, yet easy-going, with none of the hype of some races.”
“It’s a very refreshing element, to know people at the race . . . it’s almost a social occasion.”
This Saturday, however, will find Mr. Forrester assisting The Duke University track team at the ACC Championships.
