Since 1984, when he helped his mother raise $1,200 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation through a walka-thon and canvass, Greg Swain has not had to be hospitalized for treatment of the disease. A fourth year student at the University of Virginia, he will graduate next year and plans to go on to graduate school in psychiatry to become an alcohol rehabilitation counselor. “He’s able to get by with his own management therapy and medication,” Mrs. Raney said. “He goes for physical therapy at UVa hospital twice a day, five days a week. Friends help him with it on weekends. And he’s still playing golf, racquet ball and a little tennis, both for fun and for therapy.”
