By Easter, he had not had a shower in eight weeks. He finally got a shower and went to another room. Col. Holland was told by an archbishop to write a letter to his family. “I wrote to my wife and daughter about being in solitary confinement and about the doves,” said Col. Holland.
His family who lived in Annandale received the letter on a Friday. After returning from church on Sunday two doves were perched on their balcony. The birds nested there for the next two years. They have four pairs of doves living at their present home in Vint Hill.
After the first rescue attempt the hostages were moved all over the country for fear that a second rescue attempt might occur. For three nights he was bound and put in the back of a car covered with a blanket and taken close to the Persian Gulf. He was moved a total of 25 times during his captivity.
Col. Holland was again put into solitary confinement in a room that was full of bugs and fleas. Two gecko lizards came in every day to eat the bugs. “I started carrying on a conversation with them. I called one Mohammad and one Amod.” It was a way he could survive.
Eventually they returned to Tehran where he spent seven months in solitary confinement.
While sleeping on the floor one night he felt something crawling on him. Thinking it was a bat he threw it against the wall and killed it with his sandal. In the morning he saw that it was a giant cockroach. “I put the dead roach in a plastic bag and I beat on the door and demanded a piece of paper,” he said. He had a piece of a pencil lead in his pocket that was too small for any one to notice when they frisked him. On the paper he put “Hostages-1, Students0.” He ended up with two roaches, a mosquito and a fly (hostages-4, students-0).
