Murder trial delayed
Tuesday’s trial of a 16-year-old Marshall boy charged with the murder of his 12-year-old neighbor was postponed until Wednesday because the defense attorney hadn’t received proper information on the jury.
Leon P. Smith’s trial was to start Tuesday but was continued. It is expected to last until Friday.
Smith is charged with murder, abduction and aggravated sexual battery in connection with the Aug. 5 death of Melissa Lee Bushrod. He and Darren King, 16, also of Marshall, allegedly stoned the girl to death. King’s trial is set for May 7 and 8.
Under Virginia law, the Circuit Court must furnish defense attorney John W. Wine the names of the potential jurors and their ages, addresses, occupations and employors at least 24 hours before the trial if he requests the information. But the list didn’t contain some of the ages and employers.
Drums of waste found
At the request of two Fauquier firefighters, a local equipment manufacturer two years ago started delivering 55-gallon drums of used oil to the county’s abandoned landfill between Casanova and Opal.
