When they reach about an inch long, they change to nighttime feeders, coming down from the crown of the tree during the day to seek shelter. It is at this stage that they do most of their damage, wastefully chewing leaves off at the petiole.
Caterpillars are active from midApril to mid-July when they attach themselves to a surface with silk and transform into pupae. This is also a dispersal stage, as pupal cases are attached to all types of objects and are easily transported. Adult moths emerge in about two weeks and the cycle begins anew.
