“We’ve cleaned up the lunchroom, halls, and bathrooms. We’ve helped people.”
When recruiting members for the club Lorien Hargett told about her approach. “I’d teU them the club was about caring, respecting property and helping people. Then I’d tell them that they’d feel glad if they were a member and it would be fun because they could be on a committee. We have a club color. It is blue. One day we may all wear blue and have a party!”
Miss Wittl commented, “The committees help them to work in small groups. We also discuss ideas as a whole group and they’re allowed to elaborate on ideas.”
Club committees include newspaper, poster, lunchroom contest, announcements, rules and membership. Posters around the school such as “Don’t eat like a pig — be neat” are an outgrowth of the poster committee.
“Belonging to the club has created a new awareness for them, not just with our class but of the school as a whole,” Miss Wittl stated.
Miss Wittl continued, “As far as leadership goes, they’re responsible for recruiting and so they go to other classes and speak in front of the class and ask students to join. Then they go back to the classes and have the students who want to join say the pledge. This encourages them to be independent, too. I try to let the kids do as much on their own as I
