Wakefield School’s tennis players have taken to the courts to commence their 1986 season. Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams opened their seasons with a match this week against Warren County. Unfortunately for the Wakefield teams, neither was able to gain a victory as the boys were defeated by a close 6-3. and the girls were trounced 9-0.
In the boys’ match, although Warren County won by three points, there were several pivotal games. After David Rowzie of Amissville dropped an 8-3 decision in the number one slot, Larry Tarr of Warrenton barely missed victory with an 8-7 loss in the tie-breaker at the number two seed.
John Landis of Front Royal and Hugues Steinier of Culpeper cap tured 8-6 and 8-4 wins in the numbers three and four positions to tie the teams with two matches each. Then Shawn Hunter of Amissville dropped a match as did Brian McGushin of Haymarket to leave Wakefield at 4-2 going into the double matches.
