About 4.5 miles of Route 211 between Washington, Va., and Sperryville needs to be widen, according to Rappahannock Supervisor Charles Estes.
The two-lane highway is the “main artery” between the two towns and can’t handle the large amount of traffic currently using it, he told highway officials at a public hearing Friday in Culpeper.
“This section carries a high volume of traffic,” he said. “It is an old highway” — probably built before 1836.
Mr. Estes requested funds for the project be included in the highway department’s six-year plan.
But the demands for highway funds are at a premium. Twentyeight people — including Mr. Estes — from nine counties and a city presented their requests during the two-hour pre-allocation public hearing. About 50 people attended the hearing.
Virginia has about $20 billion of highway needs, but only $425 million will be available to complete them. “The needs statewide are enormous,” said Commissioner Ray D. Pethtel.
