An important way the Americans can help during a situation such as this one is to write letters. Col. Holland memorized his first letter from a ten year old boy from New York. The captors burned most of the lett ters because it would boost their morale too much but the fact that the letters were sent shook them up. They were amazed that the American people could rally together like that.
Col. Holland concluded, “You learn to survive by taking care of your teeth and skin. You have to eat, you have to exercise. Remember one thing most of all and that is that you’re an American!”
