Dimilin, registered only last year by the Environmental Protection Agency, causes a higher mortality rate among gypsy moths than do biological controls, Mr. Haskell said. Aerial application costs between $3 and $10 per acre, depending on the size of the area sprayed, he added.
“It’s really pretty cheap for a government agency (to use Dimilin on a site as small as Mathews Arm),” said the resource specialist. “But there isn’t enough money in the world to spray all the woods in the eastern United States.”
In addition to spraying with Dimilin, the park will continue a biological control program. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a bacteria naturally found in insects, then cultured and concentrated in the laboratory and turned into a spray, will be applied in moderately infested areas where it is most effective, according to Mr. Haskell.
