Therapy. It sounds so benign. Frank Deford, in his heart rending book, explains what it’s like:
“Although you may understand, intellectually, that cystic fibrosis is painful, incurable, depressing, expensive and altogether horrible, until you have lived with it you can never comprehend how impossible it is.. .Alex’s day started with an inhalation treatment. She would draw in a powerful decongestant mist to loosen the mucus that had settled in her lungs. Then, for a half-hour or more, we would give her postural drainage to accomplish the same end physically. Alex had to endure 11 different positions, each corresponding to a section of the lung, while Carol (her mother) or I pounded away at her — thumping her chest, her back, her sides, palms cupped to better dislodge the mucus. After each position, we would press hard about the lungs with our fingers, pushing in ways that were often more uncomfortable for her than the pounding was.
“Some positions Alex could do sitting up, others lying flat on our lap. But a full four of the 11 she had to endure nearly upside down, the blood rushing to her head, as we banged away on her little chest, trying to shake loose that vile mucus. One of her first full sentences was a painful plea: ‘No, not the down ones, Daddy.’ Imagine, if you will, that every day of your child’s life you are required to turn her upside down and pound on her, make her hurt and cry and plead —‘No, not the down ones, Daddy’.”
As does the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Mrs. Raney hopes that * the money raised in Rappahannock’s fund drive will help put an end to the heartache and pain she and Greg share with the Defords and thousands of other cystic fibrosis victims and their families.
