Godfrey rezoning OK’d
The first phase of development on Beacon Hill Farm passed the Loudoun County Planning Commission last week, when the commission recommended that the Board of Zoning Appeals approve a special exception for a golf course and private country club on 204 acres of the 2,083-acre estate once owned by the late entertainer Arthur Godfrey.
The recommendation was not a surprise, because the commission had reviewed the application — separately from the extensive development plans for the rest of the property — during a work session the week before. The vote was 7-0-1, with Dulles Commissioner
Carol M. Canngton abstaining because of her former role in the development partnership. Chairman John A. Stowers voted for it, after disavowing any business interest in the project and acknowledging his friendship with one of the partners, James M. Wordsworth, who owns the Festival Lakes catered park near Leesburg.
The partnership, which includes former Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr., wants to build houses and a resort hotel on the rest of the property just outside Leesburg but those plans require different approval processes than the golf course and club.
