But county officials hadn’t learned of the practice until three weeks ago when a state Health Department offical in Culpeper told them of a complaint he’d received about the rusted containers.

The 14-acre site is used by several Fauquier fire companies for controlled burning exercises. Knowing that, county officals questioned two fire chiefs and determined that Ross Industries of Midland had delivered 22 drums of oil for firefighters to use for training purposes.

Ross Industries promptly removed the drums, at the county’s request.

However, that still left 41 more barrels, many of which contain unknown liquids. Some contain “contaminated” jet fuel, which also is used for controlled burning exercises.

'Hie county has hired a Richmond testing lab to determine the exact contents of the remaining drums.
