Rappahannock’s trash crisis is over, at least for the time being.
Last week, the Division of Solid Waste Management’s enforcement chief Ken Chestnut and regional consultant Harlan Rexrod inspected the privately owned and operated Clark landfill and concluded that the eight-acre site has capacity for more trash and so can continue operating past its scheduled closure date of June 30,1987.
And in an accord approved after an executive session on Tuesday, adjacent landowners agreed not to sue the county, hauling contractor Community Trash or Clifton Clark for continued use of the site. In return, the board concurred that the landfill will not operate on Sundays and that use of the Clark property will cease December 1, 1987. Past that date, the county will be liable for a $1,000 per day charge for every day the dump continues. Further, if Rappahannock has another landfill open before the new December 31 deadline, then the county’s trash is to go there as soon as the facility is permitted.
