Daniel Fernandez tied the game at 7 as the fifth chukker ended with a shot fed by Chet Fannon. It was a chukker marked by outstanding defense, with both teams scrapping and not allowing their opponent to break away for any clear shooting opportunities.
The final period was all Rappahannock’s, however. Chet Fannon, with several outstanding feeds by his teammates, broke out of the milling pack to slam in two goals during the period. Mr. Fernandez contributed two as well, bringing his total for the match to five.
Mr. De Dios did add one last tally for the visitors during the final chukker, but it proved too little, too late, as Rappahannock ended the match up by a score of 11-8.
About 175 people attended the $25 per person benefit match, which was followed by a barbecue catered by Ed Gentry of Culpeper. The crowd feasted on roast pork with two sauces, fruit, vegetable and spinach salads, scalloped potatoes, ranch beans and chocolate-pecan pie with ice cream for dessert. The dinner was served under a giant multicolored circus tent nestled next to a grove of trees at one end of the polo field.
