In a move analogous to a battlefield promotion, the county’s new assistant school superintendent last week became its superintendent, effective July 1.
Dr. David M. Gangel was hired in May to replace Assistant Superintendent Tom Campbell, who had resigned to accept an administrative post in Orange County. Then, early in June, Superintendent Robert Estabrook announced he was resigning to join the faculty of the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education.
The School Board then offered Mr. Campbell the superintendent’s post, but he declined, sticking with his decision to accept the Orange Countyjob.
Finding themselves in the unusual position of having hired someone who was qualified for both jobs, the school board turned to Dr. Gangel. At its payout meeting last Thursday night, the announcement was made that Dr. Gangel had accepted the superintendent’s post.
“We’re quite delighted,” said School Board Chairman Beverly Massie. “We feel he comes here with ideas, that he will be a good influence on the school system. We are looking forward to working with him.”
“We’re fortunate,” she added, “after having someone who has done the job that Bob Estabrook has done, to have someone coming in with whom we feel comfortable . . . someone of Dr. Gangers calibre.” The transition period, Mrs. Massie said, should not be as traumatic as some had feared following the loss of the county system’s two top administrators.
