Each person has a “target heart” rate that is best for him or her. The target heart rate should be reached during endurance exercises to achieve physical fitness and maximum benefit from the exercise. This rate is dependent on age as well as some other factors. In time the heart becomes stronger and more efficient in delivering the oxygen. This causes the resting heart rate to gradually become lower.

Other types of exercises such as weight lifting, wrestling, and some aspects of football are called static or isometric exercises. Generally, these exercises increase muscle strength but don’t increase cardiovascular fitness.

A balanced exercise program often has both forms of exercises.
