land. The Blue Ridge Mountains had been lived in for almost 200 years. Obtaining rights-of-way involved talking to the mountain property owners one at a time. Many of these people wanted the road, but as a common highway to use to go to market. There was some disappointment and resistance when the nature of the non-commercial parkway was defined.
Construction was not a continuous process, rather a section her, one there. The first ground-breaking began on September 11, 1935, at the Virginia-North Carolina state line. The last 10 miles around Grandfather Mountain are being completed this summer.
