II Bushong House, New Market. This handsome clapboard house was in the center of the May 15, 1864, Battle of New Market in which the Virginia Military Institute corps of cadets fought as a unit and distinguished itself. Members of the Bushong family watched the battle from the basement window, and later took in and nursed the wounded from both sides.
The house, open June 15 through Labor Day, is now part of the New Market Battlefield Park.
